Connecting to QueensU-Secure Wireless

Introduction

QueensU-Secure is a dedicated wireless network service tailored to meet the connectivity needs of the faculty and staff here at Queen’s offering secure and reliable access across our campus.

This network is accessible to all current students, faculty, and staff; however, it is recommended that staff and faculty members only use this service. Students are encouraged to use the eduroam network, allowing you access services here on campus, but also allowing you to log into eduroam at many partner universities around the world using your Queen’s credentials.

Windows

Click on network
  • Click on the Network icon or the Internet icon in your system tray.

Connect to QueensU-Secure
  • Select the right arrow next to the Wi-fi symbol then select secure network for Queen’s University Campus (QueensU-Secure) and click Connect

Login
  • Enter your NetID and password; then click OK.

Complete connect
  • A Windows Security Alert message will appear. Click Connect.
  • You will now be connected to the QueensU-Secure wireless network

IOS

Double check Wi-Fi is on
  • On the home screen, and click on the Settings icon.
  • Select WiFi and ensure WiFi is turned On.

Turn off "iPhone Privacy Address"
  • To connect to the QueensU-Secure network, turn off the “iPhone Private Address” setting. To do this, click on the “i” that appears beside the network name. Note that when you turn off this setting, a privacy warning will appear.

Select "QueensU-Secure"
  • Next, tap the QueensU-Secure wireless network from the list of networks.

Login
  • Enter your NetID and password and click Join.

Double check the network
  • On the Certificate screen, verify that the Certificate displays “networkauth.queensu.ca” issued by Entrust, then click Trust.
  • You will now be connected to the QueensU-Secure wireless network.

MacOS

Open Wi-Fi
  • Click on the WiFi icon in the system tray.
  • Select the QueensU-Secure network from the available options.

Login
  • In the window that appears, enter your NetID and password and click Join.

Click "Show Certificate"
  • Verify Certificate screen may appear.

Verify the details
  • Click Show Certificate, and verify that the details are as follows, matching the screenshot below.
    • The certificate is for the server networkauth.queensu.ca
    • The certificate is issued by Entrust
    • The box “Always trust” is ticked
  • You should now be connected to the QueensU-Secure wireless network.

Android

Goto "Connections" in settings
  • Navigate to the Settings icon.
  • Under Settings, tap Connections.

Double check Wi-Fi is on
  • Make sure Wi-Fi is On, then tap Wi-Fi.

Select network
  • Tap the QueensU-Secure wireless network.

Enter the following information where prompted
  • EAP method: PEAP
  • CA Certificate:  Use (unspecified) or N/A or Use system certificates>>Do not verify (depends on version). If asked for  a domain, enter queensu.ca.
  • Identity: type your NetID username
  • Password: type your NetID password
  • Domain: queensu.ca

 You may be required to enter the advanced information options below (more recent Android systems may have additional feature):

 

  • Phase-2 authentication: MSCHAPv2
  • Anonymous identity: leave it empty
  • MAC address type: Phone MAC

Double check connection
  • You should now be connected to QueenU-Secure wireless network.

ChromeOS

Connecting to QueensU-Secure

Open Wi-Fi network
  • Select the Wi-Fi Network icon (bottom right corner).
  • Click on the Wi-Fi networks icon (located above the not connected).

Select network
  • Select the QueensU-Secure network from the list displayed.

Depending on what version of ChromeOS you are on, you may have to leave any fields not listed below blank.
  • The Join Wi-Fi network window will open, configure using the following settings if available (note you will need to scroll in the window to see all the settings).
    • EAP method: PEAP
    • Phase 2 Authentication: MSCHAPv2
    • Server CA Certificate: Default
    • Identity: type your NetID
    • Password: type your NetID password
    • Anonymous Identity: Not required, leave blank
    • Domain Suffix Match: queensu.ca

Complete connection
  • Once you have configured the network, click Connect.
  • You should now be connected to QueensU-Secure wireless network.

Disconnecting from QueensU-Secure

Open network
  • Select the Wi-Fi network icon (bottom right corner).
  • Click on the Wi-Fi networks icon (located above the connected).

Select network
  • Select the QueensU-Secure network from the list displayed.

Disconnect
  • In the Network settings window that opens, select Disconnect.

Editing your QueensU-Secure network connection settings

If you are unable to connect to QueensU-Secure due to an incorrect username/password or misconfiguration, you may want to review and adjust your connection settings.

Follow disconnect steps then configure
  • Follow Step 1 to Step 4 in the Disconnecting from QueensU-Secure section (on this page).

  • From the Network settings window, select Configure.

Change settings and save
  • This will open up the Configure QueensU-Secure window.  Adjust the configuration (refer to Step 4 and 5 of the Connecting to QueensU-Secure section for configuration) and click Save.

Connect
  • Click on the Connect button to connect to the QueensU-Secure network.

Unsupported Devices

Introduction
  • If you are using an unsupported device, this information may assist you and/or your vendor in connecting to the Queen’s Wireless Network.

Instructions
  • Any 802.11a/b/g/n compatible network card will work with the Queen’s Wireless network.
  • The SSID of “Queensu-Secure is a WPA2 encrypted network, and Student, Staff and Faculty can uses Queen’s NetID to authenticate using 802.1X using PEAP protocol.
  • The SSID of “eduroam” is a WPA2 encrypted network, and uses Queen’s NetID@Queensu.ca or other eduroam institutions email to authenticate using 802.1X. At Queen’s, eduroam is for students to connect to WiFi and visitors to connect using their home institution credentials.
  • Queen’s uses Entrust.net Secure Server Certification Authority for signing server certificates.
